Website Issues

As some of you may have noticed, between sometime Thursday and now, the url www.elonacm.org referred to a website selling tiles with Psalms written on them. Warren was contacted, and despite his being on the other side of the country, he got it sorted out. It turns out it was in no way a deliberate attack. Rather, Warren's ISP changed his IP address without telling him (I forget why, but he said they had an explanation). Well, Warren got it taken care of, his ISP changed his IP address again (this time telling him first), and this change has had time to propagate among DNS servers. So now, when you tell your friends in Canada or Cambodia about your computer club's cool blog, they will be seeing the real elonacm.org, and not that other pinkish nonsense.

Oh, and in other news, the programming contest went pretty well. More on this during the Tuesday meeting.

The F3 is a went

Wow. That was some F3^3. A huge thank you to everyone who helped out. Warren really came through with the Coke Grant and provided us with 268 cans of soda and bottles of water. Dr. Powell is a fantastic man for letting us borrow pizza money. To everyone who brought games, you are wonderful people. The people who ran tournaments? Better than saints. This evening went very smoothly, and despite the turnout was lower than last year ("only" 40 dedicated gamers this time!), I am excited and hopeful for the next one.

Speaking of future LAN parties, the Duke contingent informed us that they will be holding a LAN party of their own on December 2nd (links will be posted once we get them). I am most excited about this, and would love to see a lot of Eloners in attendance.

What did we learn? Advertise. We did not have any posters printed for this one, which we believe is why our turnout was lower.

Also, we need to have in writing who is bringing what, both in terms of systems and games. There was an inordinate amount of he-said she-said in that regard. We can make it better for next time.

Nevertheless, fantastic job everyone. I am looking forward to the Spring F3 4!

The F3 is a go.

We're one week out and looking good, despite a few technical malfunctions. The registration site is up at The F3 site, and we are expecting a good turnout. We have a sponsorship from nVidia, and for prizes we decided to get a little community interaction going on by giving $25 gift certificates to HyperMind in Burlington.

This coming ACM meeting, we are going to go over who does what, and then work on logistics of the event itself. This will include installing any necessary software - and maybe even doing some testing ;).

Remember, spread the word as much as possible since the Poster Printer went out on us. We will get some wicked awesome posters next time.

Til then, game on!

Carpenter Sodas

As Treasurer (or Numba One Balla) of the ACM, I've decided we might as well take care of supplying Carpenter Lab with sodas for the fridge in there. As you may or may not have known, Joel was taking care of that, but he hasn't gotten a chance to go to Costco lately. I talked to him about it, and he seemed open to letting me handle it.

However, I've run into a quandary. Joel was able to supply us with $.25 sodas, as at Costco, the each can costs $.244. Not being a Costco member, soda would cost me $.30 per can. Here's a question for you all:

Should ACM supply sodas at a loss of $.05 per can and keep the price the same, or should we hike the price $.05 in return for making sure the fridge up there never goes dry?

Let me know your thoughts. -Chris
